This issue of PISA in Focus addresses the increasing dynamics of Fifteen-year-olds in turning to digital tools. The total online time consumption of the Fifteen-year-olds’ has increased from 21 hours a week in PISA 2012 to 35 hours per week in PISA 2018 – almost the equivalent of an average adult workweek in OECD countries. That is why this issue outlines the importance of students to develop autonomous and advanced reading skills that include the ability to navigate ambiguity, and triangulate and validate viewpoints. Analysis points out that it is the schools that can foster proficient readers in a digital world by closing these gaps and teaching students basic digital literacy.
