PISA in Focus: How Much Do 15-Year-Olds Learn Over One Year of Schooling?

PISA in Focus is a series of monthly education policy-oriented notes designed to describe a PISA topic in a concise, user-friendly way. The October issue addresses how international data can be used to investigate learning losses and gains over a school year.

Considering that knowing the typical learning gain that students make as they progress from one grade-level to the next, is of great value to interpret PISA results. Estimates have been used to project the economic impacts of learning losses due to school closures. This issue of PISA in Focus analyses the impact of students not acquiring new skills during periods of school closures and receiving no remedial action after such periods.
